Surfaces, Spaces and Shrines: An Exploration of Urban Landscapes through Fine Art Photography

“Surfaces, Spaces and Shrines” is a compelling fine art photographic book by Michael Wyeth, exploring urban landscapes through the lens of transient beauty. Beginning in the mid-1970s and evolving into a series in 2004, the book delves into non-places such as construction sites and scrapyards, capturing them as symbols of the human condition. Imago Visual was honoured to design and manage the print production of this profound work.

Challenge

The main challenge lay in crafting a book that not only showcased Michael Wyeth’s poignant photography but also resonated deeply with the themes of transience and urban decay. The design needed to reflect the photographer’s formalist training while embracing the abstract and contemplative essence of his images.

What we did
  • Formulated a cohesive concept that mirrors the philosophical depth of Wyeth’s photography, focusing on impermanence and the human narrative within urban landscapes.
  • Created a layout that enhances the photographs’ storytelling, integrating thoughtful typography and structural design to support the visual narrative.
  • Ensured meticulous image editing to preserve the integrity and potency of each photograph.
  • Oversaw the complete printing process, choosing superior materials to match the high standards of fine art publications.
