Linganisa: Uniting Research with Design for HIV and TB
Linganisa, a pivotal research project under the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research (CIDER) at the University of Cape Town, involves a collaboration between UCT, Wits Health Consortium, and Imperial College London. The project is dedicated to producing accurate HIV and TB estimates to enhance prevention and treatment programmes in South Africa. The name ‘Linganisa,’ derived from Zulu, encompasses meanings such as “estimate,” “measure,” and “make equal,” reflecting the project’s focus on equality in health access through precise data.

Challenge
The primary challenge was to create a logo that communicates the project’s core values—disease control, scientific rigour, reliability, and collaboration. The logo needed to be appealing and recognisable to a broad audience, including policymakers, international donors, researchers, and the general public, and to symbolise the collaborative and diverse nature of the project.
What we did
- Designed a logo that integrates a modern typeface with a graphic symbol representing balance and precision, crucial in epidemiological research.
- Selected a colour palette of dark red and light blue, representing the project’s diversity and collaborative spirit.
- Developed a comprehensive brand identity that promotes the project’s commitment to scientific excellence and equity in health outcomes.
