RC&I Lab Journals: Engineering Durability and Functionality for UCT Labs
Imago Visual has once again partnered with the Research Contracts & Innovation (RC&I) department at the University of Cape Town to produce specialised Lab Journals. These journals are designed to meet the stringent requirements of laboratory environments, prioritising both functionality and durability to withstand daily lab use.

Challenge
The challenge was to design lab journals that could resist common laboratory mishaps, such as spills, while also being practical for everyday use. A key requirement was for the journals to lay flat to facilitate ease of writing and data recording.
What we did
- Chose a matte laminate for the covers to resist light liquid damage and implemented a thread sewing binding technique that allows the journals to lay flat, enhancing their usability in a lab environment.
- Ensured the journals were durable enough to handle the rigorous use within laboratory settings by selecting robust materials and construction techniques.
- Produced multiple editions of these journals, maintaining high standards of quality and durability across all iterations.
